How to use this tool
Use the profile as an observation guide, not a score
This calculator combines a child's calendar age with the Montessori four planes of development and commonly described sensitive-period ranges. It is designed to help you notice what the child may be working to master and choose a more supportive environment. It does not rank children or predict an individual developmental timetable.
A practical three-step reading
1. Start with the developmental plane
The plane gives the broad context. In the first plane, children build physical independence through movement, language, order, and hands-on experience. Later planes place more emphasis on reasoning, social belonging, identity, and contribution. Use this broad pattern before focusing on any single skill.
2. Treat sensitive periods as possibilities
A highlighted period means that an interest is often especially strong around this age; it does not mean every child will show it on schedule. Look for repeated, self-chosen activity: carrying objects, naming everything, sorting, repeating a movement, protecting order, or seeking social rules.
3. Change one part of the environment
Choose one small response you can observe for a week. Lower a shelf, slow down a demonstration, offer a real household task, simplify the number of materials, or protect a longer uninterrupted work period. Keep what supports concentration and revise what creates frustration.
What to observe this week
- Which activity does the child return to without being reminded?
- Where does concentration last longest, and what interrupts it?
- Which movement or sequence is repeated until it becomes more precise?
- Does the current challenge invite effort, or does it regularly overwhelm?
- What can the child now do independently that an adult still does for them?
Limits and professional guidance
Age ranges are approximate educational observations, not diagnostic milestones. A result cannot account for temperament, disability, language background, health, prior experience, or the quality of the environment.
This tool is not a developmental screening or medical assessment. If you are concerned about regression, hearing, movement, communication, safety, or a child's overall development, document specific observations and speak with an appropriately qualified health or developmental professional.
